CPR instructor certification course

This is a one-day program designed to prepare participants with prior training as a BLS providers training according to the American Heart Association to make the transition from provider to instructor. Basic life support instructors are the key element in the AHA training network.

The purpose of the course is to provide the instructor candidates with the knowledge and skills necessary to teach and train potential BLS providers.

This course contains modules which teach professionalism, course and session preparation, instructional strategies, assessment and evaluation, as well as other important aspects of delivery and management of a classroom/workshop.

The Part 1 course is taught through self-directed online format (instructor essentials), followed by hands-on skills training in a classroom setting.

Course Objectives

  • Effectively present the didactic material related to BLS.
  • Use adult education concepts and appropriate teaching strategies in presenting material and in monitoring and coaching participants in skills acquisition.
  • Describe the role of the BLS instructor.
  • Accurately demonstrate all CPR, foreign body airway obstruction (FBAO) /Choking skills for the adult, child and infant, and demonstrate knowledge in the use of an AED (automated external defibrillator) according to AHA guidelines.
  • Describe manikin maintenance requirements and demonstrate correct manikin decontamination.
  • Fairly and accurately evaluate basic provider candidates in a simulated situation.
  • Identify materials and resources for continued study and development as a new BLS instructor.
  • Use appropriate course scheduling and record keeping procedures as defined by AHA policy.


Students who complete the course successfully will earn a Certificate of Completion valid for two years.


Instructor candidates must align with an AHA Training Center accepting new Instructors after completing Part1 and Part 2, then register on the faculty network to be provided an authorized code to purchase course materials and have access to the vast resources provided by AHA.


Credit hours are awarded for this CE activity upon request for additional fee. The material required for this course is Instructor Essentials Course Package which must be purchased and may be included in the course fee
